Grow a Pollinator Garden That Actually Works in Canada

Most pollinator gardens fail because they're planted once in spring, with whatever looked good at the garden centre that weekend. The flowers bloom for a few weeks, the bees show up, and by August the garden is bare while pollinators are still actively foraging ,a gap that matters even more here, given how much shorter the Canadian growing season already is. Placement and Layout

 

  • Group plantings rather than scattering them. A cluster of 3–5 containers or beds at varying heights reads as a single, visible destination to a foraging bee in a way that isolated pots spread around a yard don't.
  • Use height deliberately. Taller raised beds bring flowers closer to typical pollinator foraging height and give you better views to watch the activity. This keeps things practical, not just pretty.
  • Position pollinator plants near your vegetables. Adjacent placement means bees working a lavender or zinnia bed are also within range of your tomatoes or peppers on the same pass.

Beyond Flowers: What Keeps Pollinators Coming Back

  • Water. A shallow dish with pebbles for landing spots, refreshed every few days to avoid becoming a mosquito breeding site.
  • Nesting space. Leave a patch of bare soil for ground-nesting bees, and resist cutting back every hollow perennial stem in fall — many native bee species overwinter inside them, a real consideration through a Canadian winter.
  • No pesticides, including "organic" ones. Neem oil can kill beneficial insects as readily as pests. If you need to intervene, spray at dusk to avoid open blooms, hand-pick where possible, or use a targeted insecticidal soap instead.
