It's not too late to start gardening!
By Victoria Fuller
Does this scenario sound familiar to you: You decided that “this is the year!” you are going to start gardening and cultivating the flowers and produce of your dreams right in your own backyard…but then all of a sudden BAM! It’s JULY! Well if this sounds like you then worry not! Not only are you not alone, but there is also still ample opportunity to have the garden of your dreams and successfully extend your garden season into the fall months, technically it’s never too late to start gardening as there are plants that are capable of growing year-round! Keep reading for some tips on how to get your garden on later in the year!
1. Figure out which plants will thrive in your current climate A great idea for when you’re starting your garden a little later in the season is to purchase seedlings and starter plants from your local garden centre that are already well on their way on their journey to greatness. Having plants that have already matured through their first few growth phases means that you can reap the benefits of their blooms and bounty much sooner!
2. Understand the temperature and space you have There is no “one size fits all” approach to gardening and that’s one of the most exciting and enticing things about it, your garden is never going to be identical to somebody else’s and vice versa! With this in mind, it’s important to understand the garden zone (temperature and climate) that you reside in and the space that you have to work with. There is no use planting a massive cactus in a cold and damp climate just as there is no use planting a tropical palm in a cold and dry climate. Make sure that you set yourself up for success by doing some research.
3. Prepare your garden for success
-Soil: Ensuring that your soil has the correct nutrients, composition, pH level, and compost is essential to your plant success!
-Sun: Make sure that your garden is positioned in a way that your plants will receive the exact amount of sunlight that they need to thrive and grow!
-Weeding: Make sure that your garden is free from weeds and pests before you start your gardening journey, weeds can steal essential nutrients from the plants that you cultivate so it’s important to make sure that there as few of them present as possible (unless of course you are keen on encouraging certain pollinators that only visit certain weeds: such as the monarch butterfly exclusively feeding on milkweed).
